Recent Pet Portraits on the Easel
(Updated 14th March 2011)
"George"
Pastel on Sennelier Card, 300x420mm.
A commission of a beautiful marmadale-coloured cat called George... here's the progress of the painting so far.
Having laid in some initial pastel and finding the dark and light colours in his stripey coat... the background is initially laid in also...
this may change as the painting progresses.

Having spent some more time on the background today... I decided to change it to a greeny colour to compliment George's lovely green eyes...
the next step will be working on the detailing on George himself.

"Storm"
Commissioned pastel painting, on Sennelier pastel card, 300x230mm.
This is Storm, a New Zealand huntaway farm dog, used for herding sheep.
Here is the progress so far on my easel,
slowly working up the pastel in layers, and details.
At this stage the dark and light areas of his face are being found,

Background initial layers are blocked in, and more detailing put into Storm's face, he's beginning to come alive on the paper now...
amazingly in a mostly black dog, lots of colours will go into these dark areas, if you look closely you can see purples & reds.

...and here's the almost finished painting. I will let it sit for a day or two before it is framed, ready for a Christmas surprise!

"Coco"
300x230mm. Pastel on Art Spectrum Colourfix paper.
A commissioned pastel painting of a very sweet little Miniature Poodle/Tibetan Terrier cross.
Here's the progress of the painting so far, starting with layering of soft pastels, then later detailing with pastel pencils.
There is still some tweaking to do on the face yet, and the body to be drawn in.

LEFT: Nearly finished... I will let this sit for a few days to see what areas will need tweaking. RIGHT: Finished painting

"Austin"
A commissioned pastel painting of a lovely huntaway dog called Austin. Size is 300x390mm.
Here is the progress from Day One... I always start with the eyes as I think they're the most important part to get right initially for the painting to work.

The painting is beginning to come to life now with a few more hours of pastel layering with soft pastels and pastel pencils.

Final painting... The background is complete and a lot of tweaking on the dog in general has been done

"Koshka"
Pastel on Hahnemuhle Velour Paper, 230x340mm.
Koshka is a Russian Blue (Koshka means cat in Russian). The blues are a lovely loyal breed of cat, a joy to own!
Here's the progress of the painting so far...
I can see now I've taken a photo of the artwork a couple of areas I need to alter, the slope of his eye and his nose slightly. This can be easily altered.

Almost finished, just a bit of tweaking and the background to tidy up now...
